Former BYU running back Vai Sikahema has pass away today..

Former Brigham Young University (BYU) running back and return specialist Vai Sikahema has passed away today, February 13, 2025. Born on August 29, 1962, in Nuku’alofa, Tonga, Sikahema’s journey from a young immigrant to a pioneering athlete and respected broadcaster is a testament to his resilience and dedication.

Sikahema’s family moved to the United States when he was a child, settling in Mesa, Arizona. He attended Mesa High School, where he excelled in football, earning all-state honors twice and leading his team to the 1979 state championship game. His athletic prowess continued at BYU, where he played as a running back and return specialist. Notably, he returned a punt for a touchdown in BYU’s 46–45 victory over SMU in the 1980 Holiday Bowl. In 1984, Sikahema was part of the BYU team that achieved a perfect 13–0 record, securing the national championship. By the end of his senior year, he held an NCAA record for most punt returns in a career.

In 1986, Sikahema made history by becoming the first Tongan to play in the National Football League (NFL). He was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals and also played for the Green Bay Packers and Philadelphia Eagles during his eight-season career. He was selected to the Pro Bowl twice and earned All-Pro honors in 1987.

After retiring from football in 1993, Sikahema transitioned to a successful broadcasting career. He served as the sports director for NBC 10 in Philadelphia from 1994 to 2020, becoming a beloved figure in the community.
