Billy Sims, the former Detroit Lions running back and Heisman Trophy winner, has passed away today. Born on September 18, 1955, in St. Louis, Missouri, Sims was a standout athlete from a young age. After moving to Hooks, Texas, he transitioned from baseball to football, setting state records with 7,738 rushing yards and 441 carries in a single season.
At the University of Oklahoma, Sims continued to excel, earning two consensus All-American honors and winning the Heisman Trophy in 1978. He was selected as the first overall pick in the 1980 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions. In his five-season NFL career, Sims was a three-time Pro Bowler and led the Lions to back-to-back playoff appearances in 1982 and 1983. His career was tragically cut short by a knee injury in 1984.
After retiring from football, Sims became a successful entrepreneur, co-founding Billy Sims BBQ, a restaurant chain that has expanded to over 60 locations across six states. He was known for his community involvement and dedication to his fans.
Sims’ legacy is marked by his exceptional talent on the field and his contributions off it. His passing is a significant loss to the sports community and his many fans.
